Over the next two weeks, we’ll be reviewing concepts and strategies for the upcoming STAAR on 5/15. Please make every effort to be at school.

Monday –

  • Reading Warm-Up
  • Reading Strategies
  • Quizizz – reading vocabulary

Hw: “Full Day” paired passage is due tomorrow

Tuesday-

  • Take up “Full Day” reading passage
  • Pass out “Prince Patrick” reading passage (LAST hw passage for the year)
  • “In the Blink of an Eye” Warm Up
  • Academic Vocabulary Practice

Hw: “Prince Patrick” reading passage & some vocabulary practice will be posted in your child’s Google Classroom

Wednesday- 

  • “Three Sides” Warm Up
  • Poetry vocabulary practice

Hw: “Prince Patrick” reading passage & some vocabulary practice will be posted in your child’s Google Classroom

Thursday–

  • Partners will read “For Deanna’s Eyes Only”
  • Collaborate and discuss drama
  • Drama Vocabulary Jam with partner

Hw: “Prince Patrick” reading passage & some vocabulary practice will be posted in your child’s Google Classroom

Friday- 

  • Discuss “Full Day” hw
  • “Canine Courage”  (how canines helped during 9/11 clean up)
  • Quizizz vocabulary practice

ALL QUIZLET vocabulary could be practiced over the week for a great review.

Monday –

  • Discuss Genius Hour guidelines
  • Watch “Be Remarkable”
  • Submit Driving Question for Genius Hour
  • Begin researching and diving into topic that has been approved by me

Hw: Read 20 minutes (Genius Hour topic)

Tuesday- 

  • Hand out new vocabulary (Persuasive Techniques, Biographies & Memoirs)
  • Review semester exam and discuss data

Hw: Read 20 minutes (Genius Hour topic)

Wednesday- 

  • Hand out non-fiction reading log (read on Genius Hour topic) **The back side is cause and effect.
  • Review context clues strategies and begin Black History Context Clues Task Cards

Hw: Read 20 minutes, fill in log, and finish cause/effect activity

Thursday–

  • Finish task cards
  • When finished watch “Persuasive Techniques”
  • Glue “Persuasive Techniques” into interactive notebook
  • Begin “Propaganda Powerpoint”

Hw: Read 20 minutes, fill in log, and finish cause/effect activity

Friday-

  • Continue “Propaganda Powerpoint”
  • Passion Project letter is due (parent should have signed)  **Parents are aware of child’s driving question and topic of study for Genius Hour

THIRD NINE WEEKS BEGINS!

Thursday–

  • Hand out graded reading logs and non-fiction task card grades (discuss)
  • Introduce Genius Hour and Passion Projects

What is Genius Hour? You Get to Have Your Own Genius Hour! Ideas for Genius Hour

  • Students will fill in a Google Form, which will give them ideas of interest to study (this form will be brought home so parents can help guide their child into a topic of study)

Hw: Be thinking of something you’re passionate about – something you’d like to create, solve, design, build, and learn more about (use the “idea list” to help you) and get PassionProject Introduction Letter signed

Friday-

  • Discuss reading hw (maps, charts, timelines, etc.)
  • We will watch a couple of videos that answer the question “Why have Genius Hour?”
  • Discuss various ways students can present their information, experiment, design, model, book, tri-board, poster, etc.

  • Take up “The Big Jump” drama
  • Read novel
  • View short film “The Monkey’s Paw”

Friday-

  • Compare & contrast “The Monkey’s Paw” drama to the short film (focusing on the setting, characters, and plot)

  • Go over and discuss reading log (Due Wednesday, September 6) **Students must read any 5 nights that they choose (100 minutes total)

Students are expected to read 20 minutes each night. This is not meant to be filled in or completed in one night.

Students are to complete it one question at a time.

I will grade the log using a rubric (a copy of this will go home for you to see).
